Exercises in Architecture: Learning to Think Like As Architect by Simon Unwin

Tricia Keffer Season 1 Episode 13

Exercises in Architecture: learning to think like as architect   2nd Edition by Simon Unwin published by Routledge in 2023

Each art form has it's own language. While we may not equate architecture with written music, it is - just like it. As the author discusses from his own struggles with learning architecture, he discovered architecture anew while teaching it. How do we communicate? Does architecture communicate with us? The answer is yes if we are aware of it. It forms the basis for our daily lives in many humble and not so humble ways.

Architecture informs our behaviors. It communicates ideas. Just like any other art form the language is distinct and all it's own.

In this book (and his series of books) Simon explores how we come to learn communication. How we have lost the art of spaces and voids in our daily lives. It is an instinct that we can become aware of once more. There are principals to making better spaces for not just our homes but our spiritual places and work places.

This book applies to more than architecture. It's about the bigger picture of urban design and landscape architecture too.

This is a book of exercise for both studio architecture teachers and students who want to do more.
